About 46 million Americans are being asked to quit smoking on November 17th. The American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout urges Americans to learn more about the health dangers of smoking and the need to quit.
Smoking is the most common cause of preventable deaths in this country. Smoking is responsible for nearly one in five deaths in our country – that’s 443,000 lives lost every year.
Smoking increases your risk of developing coronary artery disease, stroke, cancer and lung disease. It’s also a risk that we can take control of by stopping smoking.
We are asking our friends and neighbors who smoke to take the first step by quitting smoking for one day. That one day can be the beginning of a new life as a non-smoker.
Quitting smoking isn’t easy, but it can be done. Smoking cessation classes may help. You also can talk to your doctor about medications that may help. Tell your friends and family that you’re going to participate in the Great American Smokeout and ask for their support.
The best way to quit is to take it one day at a time. And in that one day, your heart rate and blood pressure will drop and the carbon monoxide levels in your blood will return to normal. Every day without a cigarette will improve your overall health. So take that first step and join the Great American Smokeout.
