Day 12: Make a Grocery List

Plan ahead with a grocery list. This can be the key to a nutritious diet. Without a list, it’s easier to buy the chocolate chip cookies you sampled as you walked in the story or the decorated box of sugary cereal – especially if you’re shopping on an empty stomach.

We've put together some tips to save you time, money and hopefully plan healthier meals for you and your family. It only takes a few minutes of preparation.

  • Mark Key Items: Start to jot down the must-haves or items you tend to purchase every week. This list most likely won’t change (until you find your next favorite recipe) so it’ll be easy to carry over week to week.
  • Organize:Split up your list by food groups to ensure you’re getting nutritious meals every day. You can also prioritize the order based on their location in the grocery store. If you normally start in the produce section of the store, place fruits and vegetables at the top of your list and work your way through the store.
  • Keep List Readily Available: Whether you write it down or add it to the notes on your phone, make sure the list is handy so you can add to it as you need to replenish favorites or whenever a new item pops in your head. Try out one of the many grocery list apps on your phone so it’s easily accessible at all times.
