Coral Gables Hospital Names New Director of Medical Surgical Services

November 30, 2016) – Coral Gables Hospital welcomes Catherina Chang-Martinez as the new director of medical surgical services. In this role, she will be responsible for the nursing care and daily operations of the medical surgical department.

Catherina headshotChang-Martinez joins Coral Gables Hospital with nearly 25 years of nursing experience at South Florida hospitals. In her most recent role, she worked as a research assistant at a Miami university evaluating the effectiveness of an early childhood obesity prevention toolkit. Previously, she served as the in-house nursing supervisor at sister hospital, Hialeah Hospital, where she managed the clinical operations, including patient throughput, nursing staffing, conflict resolution, patient customer service and coordination of medical services.

“With Catherina’s vast clinical knowledge and strong commitment to serving our community, we are confident that she will be a tremendous asset to our team,” said CEO Patrick Downes. “We are proud to welcome her into this leadership role as we continuously strive to provide high-quality patient care.”

Among her many professional achievements, Chang-Martinez has been published in notable journals dedicated to cardiovascular and childhood obesity research. She has also presented on those topics at health care conferences and consortiums throughout South Florida. In addition, Chang-Martinez is a member of the Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology Research and the Florida Public Health Association.

Chang-Martinez earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her Master of Science in Nursing from Florida International University. She is continuing her education at her alma mater, where she is currently pursuing a doctorate in epidemiology.
