Family Matters: Husband/father faces prostate cancer head on

Manuel Enriquez, Urology Patient

Manuel's Prostate Story A husband and father of five, Manuel Enriquez gets regular checkups to make sure he's healthy for the sake of his family. So when his primary care physician found an irregularity on his prostate, he knew he had to take immediate action.

Manuel scheduled an appointment with Dr. William Figlesthaler, a urological surgeon on the medical staff at Coral Gables Hospital, to undergo further testing.

"Because of the work I do in the healthcare industry, I could have gone anywhere for further care, but I chose the urology program at Coral Gables Hospital," he says.

Early detection makes minimally invasive procedure possible

After diagnosing Manuel with early-stage prostate cancer, Dr. Figlesthaler recommended using minimally invasive robotic surgery to remove his prostate.

"It was because of my family that I decided to take a leap of faith and have my prostate removed just one week later," he says. "I couldn’t imagine not being able to do the things we loved to do together, like boating and traveling."

Within hours after the procedure, Manuel began to notice the benefits of this relatively new surgical option.

"Everything that the doctor told me - that I would experience less pain and a shorter recovery time than if I had traditional surgery - turned out to be true," he says. "In fact, I was back in the office the very next day!"

Along with excellent medical care, Manuel received a wealth of support and encouragement from the entire Coral Gables staff.

"From the moment I walked into the main lobby up until my discharge, I was impressed with the service and treatment I received from every nurse, employee and physician I encountered."
